The National Erasmus+ Office in Palestine Launches the Information Day on 2018 call for proposals

Under the auspices of H.E the Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah and with the presence of H.E. Minister of Education and Higher Education Dr. Sabri Saidam, the Deputy EU Representative Mr. Thomas Niklasson, and Dr. Nedal Jayousi the National Erasmus Office Director launched the Erasmus+ Information Day in Palestine with over 350 participants attending from the West Bank and Gaza Strip. The audience included representatives of Ministries, Palestinian universities, distinctive scholars, representatives of embassies, NGOs, private sector and various beneficiaries.

The event took its place at the Grand Park Hotel in Ramallah and at the Islamic University of Gaza via Video Conference.

In his speech, the Prime Minister represented by Dr. Kherieh Rassas, the Prime Minister  special advisor, stressed on the significant role that the EU has been playing through the support of Palestinian Higher Education Institutions; where the National Erasmus+ Office has been remarkably modernizing the system of Higher Education by creating new opportunities for the systems of Higher Education; and by enhancing the network between the universities; together with bridging gaps amongst the Palestinian, Arab and European Higher Education Institutions. Moreover, the Prime Minister shed the light on the distinctive role of Erasmus+ in upgrading the quality of Higher Education Institutions in Palestine.

 

Higher education lies at the heart of the Europe 2020 strategy and cooperation can be considered part of the EU's DNA. This cooperation is also open to neighbors and partners beyond EU borders. The success of Erasmus+ and its predecessor programmes in Palestine is a remarkable example of what such cooperation can achieve," said Deputy EU Representative Thomas Niklasson at the opening session of the Erasmus+ Information session. "Together, we have reached thousands of students, teachers, researchers and staff in Palestinian Higher Education institutions. We are proud of this considerable success. The EU is committed to supporting education in Palestine as education is a fundamental human right and a catalyst for positive change," he added.

In his speech, the Minister of Education and Higher Education, H.E. Dr. Sabri Saidam, pointed to the great efforts and distinctive role of the National Erasmus+ office, which has significantly contributed to modernizing and developing the Higher Education Institutions in Palestine. H.E. Dr. Saidam also stressed on the significant role of the European Union in supporting the Higher Education Institutions in Palestine, particularly through Erasmus+ programme.

 The day was devoted to present the new Call for project proposals within the European Union Erasmus+ programme which includes information and guidelines of how to apply to the following programmes: Capacity Building for Higher Education, Mobility, Erasmus Joint Master Degree and Jean Monnet.

During the day, new opportunities were introduced to the Higher Education Institutions to benefit from the different EU programmes; along with genuine experiences from successful projects.

By the end of the day, comprehensive information was provided on the applications to the different programmes, the grants, and the networks with Palestinian universities together with the national priorities of the higher education.

Dr. Jayousi and Mr. Tomas Niklasson awarded the Minister of Education and HE and the Prime Minister representative appreciation certificates for their support to the National Erasmus+ Office.

 The Minister of Education and HE, the Prime Minister’s Representative, the Deputy European Union Representative and the NEO Director congratulated the winners of the 2017 call for proposals from the Palestinian universities, and encouraged them to continue their successful engagement in the Erasmus+ programme for the benefit of the Palestinian students and academic institutions and awarded the following certificates of Appreciations:

Background

 Erasmus+ is a broad programme offering European opportunities to the Southern Mediterranean region and other regions in the fields of Education, training, youth and sport with almost EUR 16.5 billion. The programme also adopts a single, unified structure with different key action areas: Mobility, Capacity Building in Higher Education and Support to Policy reform along with Jean Monnet Activities. The National Erasmus+ Office in Palestine contributes to improve the awareness, visibility, relevance, effectiveness and impact of the international components of the Erasmus+ programme and contribute to its promotion and dissemination. It also helps in:

•   Developing the capacities of the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Palestine.

•    Strengthening the relations between the Palestinian and European HEIs

•   Opening opportunities for mobility exchange for students and staff.
